FED CUP GOES BACK TO ITALY
(08.11.2009) Italy won the second Federation Cup title of its history after defeating a weakened US team in the final.
Italian Fed Cup team had a dominating 4-0 win over the Team USA, which was weakened by the absence of its top stars and relied on its younger players.

On the first day, Italian number one Flavia Pennetta beat Alexa Glatch 6-3 6-1 in a dominant 65-minute-display while Francesca Schiavone dashed US hopes by beating rising star Melanie Oudin 7-6(2) 6-2 as Italy marched 2-0 ahead. .

As US Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin also failed against Flavia Pennetta on the first match of the second day with a 7-5 6-2 score, Italian victory was definite. The fourth rubber between Schiavone and Glatch were cancelled. In doubles match, Italian pair Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci outlasted world number one player Liezel Huber and Vania King i 4-6 6-3 11-9.

After winning their first FED CUP title in 2006, Italians reached the final again in 2007 but lost to a strong Russian team. But this year’s victory puts Italians at the top position in FED-CUP Nations ranking ahead of Russia.
