THE SHOCK OF THE FIRST DAY: SHARAPOVA
(18.01.2010) 2008 Champion Maria Sharapova crashed out in the first round of the first Grand Slam of the season.
The first day of the of the first Grand Slam of the season has been a setback for one of its former champions. 14th seed and 2008 Champion Maria Sharapova was outlasted 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 by her compatriot Maria Kirilenko in the first round.

15th seeded US Open Champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium started strong against Canadian qualifier Valerie Tetrault with a 6-0 6-4 win, while compatriot Justine Henin came back to Grand Slam action by defeat,ng another Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-4 6-3.

Home favorite and last year’s quarterfinalist Jelena Dokic wasn’t as lucky this year as she was upset by 27th seed Alisa Kleybanova of Russia 6-1 7-5.
