SAFINA AND KUZNETSOVA GO DOWN
(24.01.2010) Russian players Dinara Safina and Svetlana Kuznetsova was added to the early casulty list of the Australian Open as they crashed out in the fourth round.
World number two Dinara Safina of Russia was forced to retire from her 4th round match against her compatriot Maria Kirilenko while trailing 5-4 in the first set due to a recurrence of her back injury.

The other big upset of the day came from 3th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who lost 6-3 3-6 6-1 against compatriot Nadia Petrova. Petrova had dominated Kim Clijsters in the previous round.

Former world number one Justine Henin continued her successful comeback as she outlasted younger compatriot Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(3) 1-6 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

Unseeded Jie Zheng of China became the first big surprise of the quarterfinal as she defeated 31st seed Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-6(5) 6-4 in the fourth round.
